Calythera Archives – Entry 53 – Aetherbringer Legend

The Aetherbringer Legend is the prevailing mythological account of aether’s origin in Calythera. It describes a celestial entity — an eternal engineer of vast scale — that shed two tears in an ancient, unspecified moment. These tears became the two known aether fonts: the first in the southern region later called the Verdant Cradle, and the second beneath what became Ashmourne Spire. The story frames aether as a deliberate creation rather than a random phenomenon. The fonts are presented as fixed points in a larger engineered system, their fractal and circuit-like energy a direct reflection of intentional design. This archive entry records the legend, its variations, and its enduring influence on Calythera’s cultures and mechanical practices.

The Aetherbringer Legend tells of a celestial engineer of immense scale who shed two tears, which became the source of all aether in the world.

Core Narrative

The legend describes the Aetherbringer as an eternal designer who created the fractal vein network. The two tears formed the original fonts: the first in the Verdant Cradle and the second beneath Ashmourne Spire. Aether is thus portrayed as intentional, structured energy rather than a natural accident.

Interpretations by Coalition

Different coalitions interpret the legend according to their own priorities:

  • Starwrought Enclave: Focuses on celestial projections as literal blueprints. Inventors study these etched schematics during alignments for prototype inspiration. Starfall Seekers pursue them, accepting the risk of false patterns that cause strain or failure.
  • Duskcrag Concord: Void Harmonists view aether disruptions in the Wastes as lingering effects of the first tear’s destruction. Their practices seek equilibrium to resist overloads and manage swarms.
  • Aetherbringer's Order: Stresses the eternal engineer aspect and conducts rituals in forge settings during Eclipse alignments to gain insight, though these carry documented overload risks.

Physical Remnants

A rumored physical remnant exists: the Tear Shard. Described as a small, deep-purple piece with a faint fractal glow, it is said to be untouchable — any attempt to approach or handle it causes immediate disintegration. Pre-Mourning accounts claim a great hall was constructed around it in the Cradle region, but that structure is now lost in the Wastes.

The Book of Tears

The central text associated with the legend. The original manuscripts are lost, but a current version is maintained by the Aetherbringer's Order. It preserves the core legend, ritual instructions, and interpretations of aether behavior, serving as both ceremonial reference and practical guide for resonance principles.

Cultural Practices

Among tinkers, a common practice before the Turning involves brief vent alignment — opening forge or device vents to release patterned aether sparks. This is seen as preparation for the reset cycle. At primary aether concentrations, coordinated ventings culminate in a surge from the font during the Turning’s seventh night, producing amplified geometric aether-spark patterns visible across the continent.

Role in Calythera

The legend endures because it provides a coherent model for aether’s structured, finite nature in a world of energy scarcity. It is not treated as literal history by most engineers or councils, but it frames the mechanical reality of the fonts in a way that supports ongoing ingenuity. It offers no explanation for why the first font was destroyed or how the second was found — those events are recorded separately as historical facts.
