Rift-storms are violent aetheric disturbances that occur when fractal vein pressure builds beyond the capacity of the local substrate to contain it. They are visible from a distance as swirling formations of fractured geometric light — beautiful in the way that most dangerous things are beautiful when observed from sufficient safety. Up close, they are a different matter entirely.
During a rift-storm, aether behaves in ways that no calibration can predict or correct for. Hemotech fails. Navigation becomes unreliable. The landscape itself may shift in ways that are difficult to describe and more difficult to explain afterward. Experienced travelers who have survived multiple storms tend to discuss them in the clipped, factual language of people who have learned not to dwell on what they saw.
Where They Occur
Rift-storms occur across Aeloria but concentrate heavily in The Wastes and the borderlands south of the settled coalition territories, where the aether substrate is most depleted and most unstable. The Stormcrown Peaks north of Gildspire Nexus experience near-constant rift-storm activity — one of several reasons almost no one ventures there.
In the settled city-states, rift-storms are infrequent but not unknown. When they occur in populated areas the consequences for hemotech infrastructure can be severe and the recovery period measured in cycles rather than days.
Rift Season — the period of highest aether instability, occurring on a cycle that coalition meteorologists can predict within a margin of a few weeks — sees significantly elevated storm frequency across the continent. Coalition infrastructure protocols shift during Rift Season. The Calder Lines reduce speeds. Airships ground when readings exceed established thresholds. Stamping engine operations at Reset ceremonies are monitored with additional oversight, since a rift-storm hitting during a Minor Reset has historically produced cascading failures in debt synchronization that take cycles to untangle.
What They Do
The primary effect of a rift-storm is aether disruption. Hemotech devices overload, fail to initialize, or shut down entirely depending on their proximity to the storm's center. Larger fixed installations — stamping engines, aether relays, geothermal conduits — are more robust but not immune.
Beyond the equipment effects, rift-storms produce physical phenomena that do not fit neatly into any category of mechanical failure. Void pockets form where aether concentration drops to absolute zero — small zones where nothing powered by resonance functions at all. Resonance quakes accompany larger storms, producing vibrations that can collapse unstable structures. In the deep Wastes, where the substrate is already compromised, storm effects compound existing instability in ways that make the environment actively hostile rather than passively dangerous.
The perceptual effects of rift-storms are documented but poorly understood. Time perception distorts inside heavy storm activity. Spatial relationships become unreliable. Expeditions have emerged from storm zones with conflicting accounts of how long they were inside and what direction they traveled. Coalition researchers categorize these as secondary aether effects. Wastes guides categorize them as reasons to take cover and wait.
Survival & Preparation
Standard rift-storm preparation involves reinforced shelters with heavy grounding arrays that disperse aether surges before they reach equipment. Vehicles and fixed installations carry manual aether shutoff valves for emergency isolation. Early warning networks of wave stations and sky monitors give coalition settlements advance notice of incoming storms — usually enough time to secure critical systems if the warning is acted on immediately.
In the Wastes, where none of this infrastructure exists, preparation means reading the sky, knowing the terrain, and having a plan for when the equipment stops working. It produces aether anomalies that are dangerous in themselves but occasionally stabilize into configurations that researchers find worth studying. The relic recovery industry in Ancorren and The Verge tracks storm activity closely, since a significant storm in the right location can expose materials that would otherwise require months of careful excavation.
The storms do not appear to be random. They concentrate around areas of historical aether instability — the site of the first font, the deeper Wastes interior, the Stormcrown Peaks. Whether this is simply a function of existing substrate conditions or something more deliberate is a question that does not have an official answer.
