Calythera Archives – Entry 83 – Starcrag Ranges

The Starcrag Ranges are the mountain chain that forms the western spine of Aeloria — a long, continuous geological feature running roughly north to south, defining the western boundary of the continental interior and providing the elevated terrain in which the Duskcrag Concord's foundational infrastructure is built. Ironshade Hold is carved into its face. Blackvein Hold is older than the Concord and sits between the two major settlements. The ranges are, in most practical senses, Concord territory — not by formal claim over every peak and valley, but because the Concord is the only coalition with the operational infrastructure to work them.

They are not hospitable mountains. The Starcrag Ranges are high, cold, prone to weather systems that descend without warning, and threaded with geological features that make standard navigation unreliable. Experienced guides who know specific routes can move through them efficiently. Parties without that knowledge frequently do not arrive where they intend to.

Geology

The Starcrag Ranges are geologically old — older than most of the surface features of Aeloria, formed in a tectonic period that predates the historical record entirely. The rock is dense and dark, the kind of stone that takes centuries to show wear. The Duskcrag Concord's forge infrastructure is built on the premise that this stone contains what their operations require, and the premise has proven correct across multiple Grand Reset cycles of extraction.

The most significant geological feature of the Starcrag Ranges — from both a commercial and a hazard standpoint — is the Blackvein Crystal deposits that run through the mountain formation. The veins are visible at the surface in numerous locations: dark threading through grey stone, sometimes covering entire cliff faces in patterns that the Concord's geological division has mapped extensively at surface level and declined to map below it. The deposits become denser and more unstable at depth. The deepest known concentration is beneath Blackvein Hold.

The ranges also contain the geothermal systems that power Ironshade Hold's forge infrastructure — heat and pressure from deep geological activity, channeled through engineered conduit systems into the Hold's operational core. The Concord's deep operations division manages these systems and considers them the foundation on which everything else is built.

Between the Holds

The Starcrag Ranges contain two major inhabited sites: Ironshade Hold in the north and Blackvein Hold in the south, between Ironshade and Gildspire Nexus. The territory between them is operational rather than settled — mining claims, extraction sites, monitoring stations, and the route infrastructure that connects the Concord's western operations.

House Corvayne has historically operated through the Starcrag Ranges as one of its primary working territories. The clan's familiarity with specific routes, its relationships with Concord operations personnel, and its concentration of Primal Spark carriers — who can work effectively near Blackvein Crystal deposits where standard hemotech fails — make it the preferred contractor for work in the ranges that the Concord cannot or prefers not to conduct with its own staff. The arrangement has been in place for long enough that it is simply how things work in the Starcrag.

Hazards

The Starcrag Ranges' hazards divide into three categories. Weather: the ranges generate their own systems, and the transition from clear to impassable can occur faster than most parties can respond to without prior experience of the terrain. Navigation: the geological density of the ranges disrupts standard hemotech navigation equipment in ways that vary by location and are not predictable without local knowledge. And crystal instability: in areas near significant Blackvein Crystal deposits, aether discharge events can occur without warning, with effects ranging from equipment failure to structural collapse depending on proximity and concentration.

The Concord issues route advisories for the ranges on a regular cycle. The advisories are accurate for known routes. The ranges contain a significant amount of territory that is not on any Concord advisory route.
