The Verdis Covenant controls the second aether font — the only known stable source of aether on the continent — and has done so since the post-Mourning reconstruction established the coalition framework. Everything else the Covenant does flows from this single fact. It stewards the font. It maintains the vein distribution network. It hosts the Grand Alignment every fiftieth cycle. And it holds, in consequence, a position of quiet structural authority that none of the other coalitions can replicate and none of them are entirely comfortable with.
The Covenant does not advertise this authority. It does not need to. Everyone already knows.
Geography & Territory
The Covenant's territory centers on the Aethermere Lake district in central-southern Aeloria — a large body of water whose misty shores and geothermal activity create the environmental conditions that support both the font infrastructure and the geothermal energy systems the Covenant specializes in. The district is among the most temperate and agriculturally productive in Aeloria, which is not coincidental. The Covenant has managed its territory's resources with the same long-term perspective it applies to the font.
Ashmourne Spire rises at the lake's center — a settlement built vertically as much as horizontally, its upper levels extending into the mist that sits permanently over Aethermere. The font chamber is beneath the spire, accessible through a series of descending maintenance corridors that the Covenant monitors continuously and accesses under specific documented protocols. The Central Aether Reactor manages distribution from the font to the vein network. The Lakefront Promenade serves as the Covenant's primary public-facing district — commerce, diplomacy, and the kind of architectural beauty that communicates institutional permanence. The Grand Cogspan Bridge connects the promenade to the outer districts across the lake's narrowest crossing and is one of the most photographed structures in Aeloria by travelers who have never needed to cross it under pressure.
Government
The Covenant is governed by the Council of the Font, a body whose membership is determined by demonstrated expertise in geothermal systems, aether distribution, or the maintenance disciplines that keep the font infrastructure operational. The Council operates by consensus on most matters, with the Provost holding final authority on decisions affecting font access and vein calibration — a scope that is technically narrow and practically enormous.
Provost Liora Thorne has held the position for multiple cycles and is regarded, across all four coalitions, as one of the most capable administrators on the continent. She speaks carefully, commits to positions slowly, and does not reverse them without documented reason. Coalition leaders who have attempted to leverage the font situation into political advantage during negotiations with her have consistently found that she had already accounted for the attempt before the meeting began.
The Font & Its Implications
The second aether font is the single most consequential piece of infrastructure in Aeloria. Every stamping engine that enforces the debt resets, every hemotech device in every coalition city, every Calder Lines train and every airship running routes across the continent is ultimately downstream of the font beneath Ashmourne Spire. The Covenant does not need to threaten anyone with this. The architecture of dependence is self-evident.
The Covenant maintains this infrastructure with a level of care that other coalitions occasionally describe as excessive and that the Covenant describes as proportionate to the consequences of failure. Maintenance schedules are documented and followed. Access to the font chamber is restricted, logged, and reviewed. The historical records related to the font — including records from the Mourning period that are not available through any other coalition archive — are held under Covenant stewardship and have not been made available for independent review.
That these records exist is publicly known. What they contain is not.
Economy
The Covenant's economy runs on refined aether components, sustainable geothermal technology, scholarly expertise in aether systems, and diplomatic services. It serves as the neutral venue for high-level inter-coalition negotiations that cannot be held on any single faction's territory — a role that generates both revenue and information in roughly equal measure.
Geothermal exports — heat exchange systems, pressurized steam infrastructure, thermal regulation components — supply the heavy industry of the Duskcrag Concord and the Ironclad Dominion's forge districts. The Covenant's aether distribution research produces technical publications that the Starwrought Enclave cites more than it acknowledges.
Relations with Other Coalitions
The Covenant's relationship with every coalition is shaped by the same underlying dynamic: they control what everyone needs. The relationships are therefore managed with exceptional care — the Covenant cannot afford to make enemies, and the other coalitions cannot afford to push hard enough to find out what happens if they do.
With the Starwrought Enclave, the relationship is collegial and occasionally collaborative. Both value systematic expertise and institutional thinking. The areas of research overlap between them have produced productive joint work and unresolved jurisdictional questions in roughly equal proportion.
With the Ironclad Dominion, the relationship is formal and functional. The Dominion controls maritime routes the Covenant needs. The Covenant controls aether the Dominion depends on. Both parties understand the mutual dependency and conduct their negotiations accordingly.
With the Duskcrag Concord, the relationship is the most straightforward — the Concord supplies geothermal materials the Covenant uses, the Covenant provides aether distribution access the Concord requires, and both parties prefer clarity over nuance.
The Grand Alignment
Every fiftieth cycle, the Covenant hosts the The Grand Alignment — the 21-day festival that coincides with the Grand Reset and serves as the continent-wide calibration event for all stamping engines. Coalition leaders, senior administrators, technical specialists, and an enormous number of people who simply want to be present for the most consequential gathering in Calythera converge on Ashmourne Spire for the duration.
The Grand Alignment is simultaneously a festival, a political summit, a technical calibration operation, and the single moment every fifty cycles when the Covenant's position at the center of continental life is most visibly on display. Provost Thorne hosts. Everyone attends.
