Calythera Archives – Entry 47 – The Mourning
The Mourning is the name given to the catastrophic event that destroyed the first aether font — a blue-white detonation that swallowed hundreds of thousands of lives, erased a seat of civilization, and left a wound in the land that has never fully closed. Official coalition records describe it as a tragic consequence of unstable aether conditions during an already compromised geological period. The inquiry was closed within two cycles of the event.
What the official record contains fills a paragraph. What it omits has never been formally measured.
What Happened
The Mourning followed the Pre-Mourning Cataclysm, which had already fractured the southern land mass and destabilized the aether concentrations surrounding the first font. The Mourning was the second event — a catastrophic release of uncontrolled aether that destroyed the font chamber entirely.
What triggered the release is not recorded in any document the coalitions have made available for public study. The explosion produced a blue-white detonation visible from hundreds of miles away. Uncontrolled aether surges radiated outward for miles in every direction. The surrounding settlements were destroyed. Conservative estimates from coalition census records place the immediate death toll in the hundreds of thousands, though those records are incomplete — many of the relevant population logs from the region did not survive the aftermath.
The site has been uninhabitable ever since. It forms the heart of what is now the deep Wastes, where standard hemotech remains unreliable or fully inert to this day.
Aftermath & Reorganization
The Mourning did not simply destroy. It reorganized.
The coalitions responded to the loss of the first font by centralizing all aether distribution through what would become the second font beneath Ashmourne Spire. The Verdis Covenant was formally established to oversee and maintain it. The layers of oversight, the maintenance schedules, the restricted access to the font chamber — all of it was designed in direct response to watching the first font fail.
The debt cycle systems were also formalized in the Mourning's aftermath. Pre-Mourning accounting had been informal — family-managed obligations, social reset ceremonies, hereditary debts passed without mechanical enforcement. What replaced them was precise and enforced by stamping engines linked directly to the aether veins. A civilization that had watched what happens when systems fail does not leave its remaining systems to chance.
The Wastes are the Mourning's most permanent legacy — not just the old damage from the Pre-Mourning Cataclysm, but deepened and extended by the font's destruction. The boundary of reliable hemotech moved north after the Mourning and has not moved back.
The Official Record
The coalition inquiry into the Mourning lasted less than two cycles and produced a single public document: a finding of unavoidable catastrophic failure due to pre-existing geological instability. No individual or institution was found responsible. The inquiry was closed. The records were sealed under Verdis Covenant stewardship and have not been made available for independent review.
Requests to reopen the inquiry have been submitted fourteen times across four Grand Reset cycles. Each has been declined without stated reason.
What Is Not Known
The questions that remain unanswered are not small ones.
Why was the font unstable in ways that went undetected or unreported before the event? Why were the population records from the surrounding settlements so thoroughly absent from the aftermath? Why does the Primal Spark — the only known phenomenon that operates reliably in the deep Wastes — appear to behave in ways that orthodox hemotech theory cannot account for?
The coalitions do not fund research into these questions. Several independent scholars who pursued them have found their access to historical archives restricted or revoked. The Mourning is, officially, a closed matter.
