Calythera Archives – Entry 2 – Aeloria
Aeloria is the primary landmass of Calythera — a continent of varied terrain, uneven resources, and the kind of history that sits quietly under the present until someone starts digging. It runs from temperate northern highlands interrupted by geothermal rifts and river systems, through the settled territories of four major coalitions, to the fractured southern expanse of The Wastes where the Mourning's consequences are still visible in the ground itself.
The continent is powered, organized, and to a significant extent defined by aether — the fractal, circuit-like energy distributed through the second font beneath Ashmourne Spire and the network of veins that extend from it across the land. Every city, every trade route, every debt cycle and festival calendar is built around maintaining access to that distribution network. The veins are the spine of civilization. Everything else is arranged around them.
Geography
Northern Aeloria is the most temperate and most densely settled region of the continent. The highlands contain geothermal peaks — most prominently the Starcrag Ranges in the northwest — and river systems including the Steelvein that facilitate transport, power generation, and consistent agricultural output. The four coalition city-states occupy this region, connected by the Calder Lines rail network and a web of established trade routes that have been in continuous use since the post-Mourning reconstruction.
The terrain transitions southward with the gradual persistence of something that has been eroding for a long time. Temperate valleys give way to drier borderlands. Borderlands give way to the outer Wastes. The Wastes give way to the deep interior, where the land remembers the Mourning in ways that the settled north has largely been able to set aside.
The Aethermere Lake district surrounds Ashmourne Spire in the central-southern settled region — a large body of water whose misty shores support the geothermal and aether conduit infrastructure that makes the Verdis Covenant's stewardship of the second font possible.
The Stormcrown Peaks north of Gildspire Nexus form a near-impassable barrier of storm-lashed mountains where rift-storm activity is near-constant and aether veins run unstable. They are not uninhabited — relic hunters and researchers operate there — but they are not hospitable.
The Aether Vein Network
All aether in Aeloria traces back to the second font beneath Ashmourne Spire. The fractal veins that extend from it are not independent sources — they are extensions of a single origin point, delivering energy to the settlements at diminishing efficiency as distance increases. Every conduit requires calibration. Every city is, in a practical sense, downstream of every other.
The distribution network was engineered in the post-Mourning reconstruction period, primarily through the work of Elandor Thorne — the historical engineer credited with developing resonance-etched conduit systems that made long-distance aether transport possible. The Calder Lines rail network was built alongside and in coordination with the vein infrastructure by Theron Calder, whose family resettled at Gildspire Nexus after the Mourning and built the continent's primary transport spine from there.
Aether density decreases reliably as you move south and as you move away from major vein junctions. In the borderlands the thinning is noticeable. In the Wastes it is operationally significant. In the deep interior, it approaches zero.
Natural Resources
Aeloria's resources are finite and unevenly distributed, which is the primary engine of coalition rivalry and coalition cooperation simultaneously.
Aether crystals form along vein junctions and are harvested for hemotech components — the most widely traded high-value material on the continent. Geothermal vents, concentrated primarily in the Verdis Covenant and Duskcrag Concord territories, provide heat and pressurized steam for forges, engines, and aether relay amplification. The mineral deposits of the Starcrag Ranges supply the raw materials for hemotech construction and the Duskcrag Concord's manufacturing economy.
In the Wastes, resources of a different kind exist — pre-Mourning relics and architectural materials that cannot be produced by current methods. Their recovery is dangerous, expensive, and sufficiently profitable that the industry has not stopped despite the consistent losses.
History
Pre-Mourning records — those that survived the event and have been made available through coalition archives — describe the southern region of Aeloria as the Verdant Cradle: a fertile, populous territory centered on the first aether font and substantially more developed than the northern regions that would become the current coalition territories.
The Mourning destroyed the first font and the Verdant Cradle with it. The survivors reorganized north of the damage. The second font, discovered beneath what would become Ashmourne Spire, became the new center of aether distribution. The post-Mourning reconstruction produced the coalition framework, the debt cycle systems, and the infrastructure that currently governs the continent.
What existed in the Verdant Cradle before the Mourning — the full extent of its civilization, its records, its knowledge — is not comprehensively known. The coalition historical archives contain references that suggest the pre-Mourning world was more developed than the reconstruction period acknowledged. Those references are not widely discussed.
The Five Peoples
Five peoples share Aeloria, each with a distinct relationship to the land and to hemotech.
Humans are the most numerous and most widely distributed, occupying roles across all four coalitions and the independent territories between them. Dwarves concentrate in the geothermal and mineral-rich regions, particularly the Duskcrag Concord, where their endurance in high-heat environments makes them natural engineers and forge-masters. Gnomes distribute across the settled territories with a particular concentration in the Starwrought Enclave, where their technical precision and appetite for refinement aligns with the Enclave's research culture. Aetherborn — rare, unmistakable, their fractal vein patterns luminescent beneath translucent skin — appear across the continent without pattern, associated with no single coalition. Reclaimers occupy the borderlands and outer territories, a people adapted to thin-aether environments in ways that make them invaluable in places where others cannot function.
All five carry the Resonant Mark. Most do not know what it is.
