Calythera Archives – Entry 2 – Aeloria

Aeloria is the continent. It runs from the storm-lashed peaks of the northern highlands to the fractured southern expanse of The Wastes, and in between it contains everything a civilization requires and several things it would rather not think about too carefully. The Ironclad Dominion controls its eastern coast. The Starwrought Enclave occupies its northern highlands. The Verdis Covenant administers its central-southern lake district. The Duskcrag Concord is carved into its western mountain ranges. Each of them has been here long enough that the distinction between the coalition and the geography it occupies has become difficult to make cleanly.

The continent is powered by aether — fractal energy distributed outward from the second font beneath Ashmourne Spire through a vein network that reaches every major settlement at diminishing density as distance increases. Every city-state is built around its position in that network. The settlements that are not near major vein junctions carry the operational costs of that distance in higher maintenance requirements and less reliable infrastructure. They have not moved.

Geography

Northern Aeloria is temperate, densely settled, and geologically active. The Starcrag Ranges in the northwest rise into volcanic peaks that the Duskcrag Concord has been carving into for centuries — Ironshade Hold is the most significant result but not the only one. The Calder Vale in the north shelters Gildspire Nexus behind walls of sheer cliff accessible through a pre-Mourning gate that the Starwrought Enclave administers and has not been able to replicate. River systems including the Steelvein cross the northern interior, facilitating transport and power generation for the settlements along their corridors.

The central region is where the continent's administrative weight concentrates. Aethermere Lake surrounds Ashmourne Spire in the central-southern reaches — a large body of water whose aether saturation reflects its proximity to the font beneath the island. The Calder Lines connect the major city-states through this region, following vein corridors that the rail network's founders mapped specifically for the purpose.

South of the settled territories the terrain changes with the gradual certainty of something that has been eroding for a long time. Temperate valleys give way to drier borderlands. Borderlands give way to the outer Wastes. The deep interior of the Wastes is its own category entirely — fractured geology, near-zero aether, and the buried ruins of the Verdant Cradle civilization that occupied the southern continent before the Mourning ended it. The Stormcrown Peaks north of Gildspire Nexus form a near-impassable barrier of storm-lashed highlands where rift-storm activity is near-constant. They are not a destination. They are a boundary.

The Aether Vein Network

All aether in Aeloria originates from the second font beneath Ashmourne Spire. The fractal veins extending from it are not independent sources — they are extensions of a single origin point, which is why the Verdis Covenant's stewardship of the font carries the political weight it does. Control the font and you control, at a structural level, everything downstream of it. The Covenant's consistent position is that it administers the font as continental infrastructure rather than coalition resource. The other coalitions accept this. Whether they would continue to accept it under different circumstances is a question that has not been tested.

The distribution network was engineered during the post-Mourning reconstruction by Elandor Thorne — the historical engineer credited with developing resonance-etched conduit systems that made long-distance aether transport viable. The Calder Lines were built alongside the vein infrastructure by Theron Calder, whose family resettled at Gildspire Nexus after the Mourning and spent three generations building the transport spine that still carries the continent's traffic.

Aether density decreases with distance from the font and from major vein junctions. In the settled city-states the density is stable and reliable. In the borderlands it thins enough to be operationally significant. In the Wastes it approaches zero, and in the deep interior it reaches it.

Natural Resources

Aeloria's resources are finite and unevenly distributed — the primary engine of coalition rivalry and coalition cooperation simultaneously. No coalition has everything it needs. Every coalition has something the others want. The arrangement has proven more durable than anyone designed it to be.

Aether crystals form along vein junctions and are the most widely traded high-value material on the continent — essential for hemotech components at every scale. Geothermal vents concentrated in the Verdis Covenant and Duskcrag Concord territories provide heat and pressurized steam for forge operations and aether relay amplification. The mineral deposits of the Starcrag Ranges supply the raw materials for the heavy manufacturing that the Duskcrag Concord's economy is built on.

In the Wastes, a different category of resource exists. Pre-Mourning relics and architectural materials that current methods cannot replicate are recoverable from the buried ruins of the Verdant Cradle — dangerous to reach, expensive to extract, and profitable enough that the industry has not stopped despite the consistent losses.

History

The pre-Mourning records that survived and have been made available describe the southern region as the Verdant Cradle — a fertile, populous territory substantially more developed than the northern regions that would become the current coalition territories. The first aether font operated there. The Mourning ended it.

What caused the Mourning, and what specifically happened to the first font, has not been established in any document the coalitions have made available for public study. The official inquiry closed in under two cycles. The records were sealed. The second font, beneath what would become Ashmourne Spire, became the new center of aether distribution. The post-Mourning reconstruction produced the coalition framework, the debt cycle systems, and the infrastructure that currently governs the continent.

What existed in the Verdant Cradle — the full extent of its civilization, its records, its knowledge — is not comprehensively known. The coalition archives contain references suggesting the pre-Mourning world was more developed than the reconstruction period acknowledged. Those references are not widely discussed.

The Five Peoples

Five peoples share Aeloria, each with a distinct relationship to its land and its systems. Humans are the most numerous and most widely distributed, occupying roles across all four coalitions and the independent territories between them. Dwarves concentrate in the geothermal and mineral-rich regions — particularly the Duskcrag Concord, where their endurance in high-heat environments and their generational relationship with stone makes them natural engineers and forge-masters. Gnomes distribute across the settled territories with a particular concentration in the Starwrought Enclave, where their appetite for precision and refinement aligns with the Enclave's research culture. Aetherborn are rare and unmistakable — their fractal vein patterns luminescent beneath translucent skin — appearing across the continent without pattern, associated with no single coalition. Reclaimers occupy the borderlands and outer territories, adapted to thin-aether environments in ways that make them invaluable in places where others cannot function.

All five carry the Resonant Mark. Most do not know what it is.
