Calythera Archives – Entry 40 – Duskcrag Concord
The Duskcrag Concord occupies the volcanic Starcrag Ranges in western Aeloria and has maintained its position there since the post-Mourning reconstruction without significant territorial ambition in any direction. It does not want more land. It wants better ore, better forges, and clearer contracts. It has all three in sufficient quantity, which is why it remains, by most measurements, the most internally stable of the four coalitions.
The Concord is not flashy. It is the coalition that makes the parts the other coalitions need and charges a fair price for them. It has been doing this for as long as the coalition framework has existed and shows no indication of stopping.
Geography & Territory
The Starcrag Ranges are a chain of volcanic peaks in western Aeloria — geothermally active, mineral-rich, and not particularly hospitable to anyone who did not grow up there. The Concord's settlements are built into and around the mountains rather than on top of them, taking advantage of geothermal heat for forge operations and natural stone for fortification. The result is a series of holds that are extremely difficult to assault and extremely productive to supply from.
Ironshade Hold is the primary settlement — a fortified city of layered stone and brass built around the largest accessible mineral deposits in the known world. Its forge halls run continuously. The smoke from the Geothermal Forge Halls is visible from the approaches long before the city itself comes into view, which experienced travelers take as a navigational landmark and first-time visitors find somewhat alarming.
Blackvein Hold lies in the mountains between the Starcrag Ranges and Gildspire Nexus — an abandoned pre-Mourning dwarf citadel that the Concord monitors but does not occupy. The ruins contain Blackvein Crystal deposits that are valuable and unstable in roughly equal measure. The Concord has never formally sanctioned excavation. Independent operators who have attempted it have had mixed results, several of which have not been recoverable.
Embercrag Hollow is a smaller settlement in the southern Starcrag approaches, used primarily as a staging point for mineral extraction operations and as the closest Concord-affiliated location to The Verge trade routes.
Government
The Concord is governed by the Vault Council — a body whose membership is determined by demonstrated forge service and technical achievement within the Concord's industrial hierarchy. Leadership requires people who understand what the Concord produces and what it costs to produce it. The Council does not have much patience for abstraction.
Warden Garrick Stoneforge has led the Vault Council for a significant portion of the current Grand Reset cycle. He is broad, direct, and has a prosthetic right hand that he fitted himself and that performs better than the original by his own assessment. He prefers short meetings with clear outcomes and has a documented pattern of ending negotiations that are not progressing by standing up and leaving. This approach has produced more favorable outcomes than coalition diplomats from other factions initially expected.
Industry & Economy
The Concord's economy is built on extraction and manufacture. Raw minerals — iron, copper, brass alloys, the high-grade deposits that precision Hemotech requires — come out of the Starcrag mines in quantities that no other coalition can match. They are processed in the forge halls, fabricated into components and heavy machinery, and exported to every other coalition on the continent.
The Ironclad Dominion buys the Concord's mineral output for its shipyards and brasswork industry. The Starwrought Enclave sources the high-grade materials its precision instrument work requires from Concord mines. The Verdis Covenant uses Concord geothermal components in its aether distribution infrastructure. Every coalition is downstream of the Concord's extraction operations in some practical sense, a fact that the Vault Council notes in trade negotiations without ever stating directly.
The Concord also produces the most durable personal hemotech equipment available — tools, armor components, and weapons built to survive conditions that lighter manufacture cannot withstand. Their steam-blades are heavier than the standard pattern and considerably harder to break.
Guarded Innovation
The Concord innovates, but carefully. New techniques are tested internally before being shared, patented before being demonstrated, and priced before being distributed. The Starwrought Enclave occasionally describes this approach as conservative. The Concord describes it as not giving things away.
There are documented cases of Concord technical developments that were not shared with other coalitions for multiple Reset cycles after their internal adoption. The other coalitions are aware of this pattern. The Concord does not deny it. The conversations this produces are among the more interesting recurring features of inter-coalition trade negotiations.
Relations with Other Coalitions
The Concord's relationships with the other coalitions are uniformly functional and uniformly transactional. It does not pursue close alliances. It honors contracts. The distinction, from the Concord's perspective, is sufficient.
With the Ironclad Dominion, the relationship is the continent's most straightforward major trade arrangement — the Dominion buys, the Concord sells, both parties record the transaction and continue. With the Starwrought Enclave, there is a productive dynamic around high-grade material supply and a less productive dynamic around who owns what when an Enclave researcher improves on a Concord technique. With the Verdis Covenant, the relationship is respectful and low-drama — both factions prefer clarity and neither is inclined toward unnecessary complexity.
What the Concord Knows
The Starcrag Ranges sit between the settled coalition territories and the southern approaches to The Wastes. The Concord has been monitoring that border longer than any other coalition. Its records of what comes out of the Wastes — what relic hunters bring back, what conditions they report, what they do not come back from — are more extensive than any publicly available archive.
The Vault Council has not made these records available for external review. Requests have been received and filed without response.
