Calythera Archives – Entry 45 – Overlord Harlan Drake
Harlan Drake is the current Overlord of the Ironclad Dominion and the presiding authority at Brassveil Port. The title of Overlord is the Dominion's highest office — it carries executive authority over the Trade Council, final say on maritime policy and debt enforcement, and the role of primary external representative in inter-coalition affairs. Drake has held the office for nine years.
He is recognizable in public contexts by a brass-and-crystal prosthetic left eye, the result of an injury sustained during a disputed account that the Dominion's records do not detail. It is functional. He does not discuss it.
The Office
The Overlord of the Ironclad Dominion operates through the Trade Council — the body of senior merchants, shipyard administrators, and debt ledger authorities that manages the Dominion's day-to-day commercial operations. The Council holds considerable independent authority over routine matters. The Overlord holds authority over decisions that exceed the Council's mandate: major shifts in trade policy, the Dominion's formal positions in inter-coalition disputes, and anything affecting the operation of Brassveil Port's stamping engine complex.
The office also carries the Dominion's public face at continental events. Drake attends the Grand Alignment as the Dominion's representative. His presence at The Verge festival is noted in records of each annual event.
What Is Documented
Drake's record before the Overlordship runs through the Dominion's commercial infrastructure. He held positions in the Trade Council's debt arbitration division, then in maritime licensing, then as Trade Council Chair — the office directly below the Overlordship — for six years before his elevation. The elevation followed the previous Overlord's retirement and was confirmed by Trade Council vote with no recorded dissent.
His tenure as Overlord has been characterized by consistent pressure on trade route access and patent licensing terms — pushing the Dominion's commercial interests in inter-coalition negotiations with the kind of persistence that produces results on a long enough timeline. The Starwrought Enclave has been the primary counterparty in most of these disputes. The disputes have remained commercial rather than becoming something else.
The failed Turning at Brassveil Port is the most significant event of his tenure to date. The stamping engine complex under his coalition's authority produced the first recorded misfire in the continental network's operational history. Drake described it publicly as a technical matter under investigation. The consequences review convened by the Trade Council has not released its findings. He has not characterized the situation further in any public statement.
The scale of the problem — debts uncleared, contracts unreset, affected parties ranging from individual traders to major guild organizations — is not in dispute. What caused it, and what the Dominion's accountability for it may be, remains open.
Reputation
Drake is regarded by outside observers as a reliable representative of the Dominion's interests, which is to say: predictable in his objectives, skilled at pursuing them, and not inclined to let courtesy interfere with the pursuit. Coalition counterparts who have negotiated with him describe a consistent pattern — calm, prepared, patient, and willing to let a negotiation run longer than the other party wants it to.
The failed Turning has complicated this reputation in ways that are still being assessed. An Overlord whose coalition's infrastructure produced an unprecedented continental failure is in a position that the Dominion's commercial credibility — carefully maintained over decades — was not designed to absorb. How Drake navigates it will define the remainder of his tenure more than anything that preceded it.
