Calythera Archives – Entry 90 – Council of the Font
The Council of the Font is the governing body of the Verdis Covenant and the institution through which the Covenant exercises administrative authority over Ashmourne Spire and the aether font infrastructure it houses. It is composed of the chief administrators of each major font management division — aether distribution, calibration systems, environmental monitoring, the archive, and external relations — along with the senior staff of the Vellumspire Academy. Membership is appointed by the Provost from qualified candidates within the Covenant's institutional structure and reviewed at each Grand Reset.
The Council of the Font exists because the font infrastructure requires continuous, expert administration by people who understand it from direct operational experience. This principle — that the people governing the font should be the people who work with it — is consistent across the Covenant's entire governance philosophy and produces a Council whose members have, in most cases, spent their careers in font-adjacent technical work before reaching the Council level.
Membership & Composition
Council membership corresponds to divisional leadership within the Covenant's font management structure. The head of each major division holds a Council seat for the duration of their divisional tenure. Divisions are not restructured frequently — the font management architecture has been stable for multiple Grand Reset cycles — which produces a Council whose composition changes slowly and whose institutional memory runs deep.
The Provost appoints division heads from within each division's senior staff, with the Council's advisory input. The process is not a vote but it is not unilateral — the Covenant's governance culture emphasizes collective technical judgment, and appointments that lack broad support within a division tend not to produce effective divisional leadership. The Provost is aware of this and factors it into appointments accordingly.
Authority & Function
The Council of the Font holds authority over the Covenant's operational decisions — the management of the font distribution network, the calibration schedules that maintain aether flow consistency across the continental grid, the environmental monitoring that tracks the lake and surrounding geological systems for anomalies, and the access policy that governs who can approach the font infrastructure and under what conditions.
The Council also administers the Covenant's sealed archive — the Mourning-period records whose contents have not been publicly disclosed. Access requires Council authorization at the senior level. Requests are processed. Response timelines are not guaranteed.
The Grand Alignment calibration sequence is the Council's most significant regular function. The preparation for the Alignment's final night begins months in advance, coordinated across every division simultaneously, and the Council oversees the entire process. The Provost participates in the calibration sequence directly. The Council's role is to ensure that every component of the preparation is correct before the Provost reaches the font interface level.
Structural Position
The Council of the Font occupies a structural position in inter-coalition governance that has no equivalent. The Trade Council controls trade infrastructure. The Vault Council controls materials and extraction. The Resonance Council controls patent architecture. The Council of the Font controls the aether font — the system on which all of the others depend.
This gives the Council a form of authority that it consistently declines to exercise as leverage. The Covenant's institutional position — the font is continental infrastructure, administered for everyone's benefit — is maintained by the Council as a governing principle rather than a negotiating posture. Whether this would remain true under different leadership or different circumstances is a question that has not been tested. The Council appears to be aware that the question exists.
