The Grand Clockwork Tower is the primary continental timekeeping and synchronization structure, located at the center of Brassveil Port. It tracks the debt cycle calendar — current cycle phase, time to the next Minor Reset, seasonal position in the Grand Reset arc — and broadcasts this information through a network of steam-driven announcement horns to the city and through aether relay conduits to the Calder Lines waystation network across the continent. Every stamping engine in Aeloria synchronizes to the Tower's reference signal. The Ledger & Lash's reset operations are timed against it. The Turning festival's midnight countdown is declared from it.
It has maintained accurate time since its construction. The record is unbroken. In a world built on synchronized mechanical systems, this is not a minor distinction.
Structure
The Tower contains nested gear systems driven by a combination of geothermal steam and aether resonance — the mechanical timekeeping apparatus and the resonance systems that interface with the vein network operating in parallel rather than sequence. At its core, a master resonance pendulum linked to the primary aether vein junction beneath Brassveil Port provides the reference signal against which all other cycle timing is calibrated. The crystal display faces visible from Vanderforge Square show cycle phase, reset countdown, and current time in formats that the city's commercial population reads as instinctively as weather.
The Tower's horn system — steam-driven announcement pipes of varying tones distributed across the upper structure — broadcasts time signals and cycle announcements at intervals throughout the day. The sound carries across most of the city in calm conditions. Residents of Brassveil Port who have lived there long enough stop hearing it consciously and notice its absence immediately when maintenance requires a shutdown.
Function
The Tower's primary function is reference — providing the timing signal that the continental stamping engine network, the Calder Lines scheduling system, and every institution in Brassveil Port that runs on cycle timing uses as its baseline. Secondary functions include: broadcasting cycle announcements to the city's public spaces, maintaining the backup relay conduits that supplement Ashmourne Spire's primary distribution network, and serving as the official declaration point for the start and end of Turning festival periods.
The Tower also serves a practical administrative function during the Grand Alignment — coordinating the timing signals that the inter-coalition calibration sequence at Ashmourne Spire requires to synchronize correctly with the broader continental network. The Tower's crew works extended schedules during Alignment periods, maintaining signal accuracy under conditions of elevated network demand.
The failed Turning's misfire did not affect the Tower's timekeeping — the Tower measures time, it does not execute the reset. What it broadcast at midnight during the failed reset was an accurate signal against which an incomplete stamping engine operation played out. The Tower's logs of that night are among the clearest documentation of the misfire's precise timing that any institution possesses. Whether the Trade Council's consequences review has accessed those logs is not publicly documented.
