Calythera Archives – Entry 1 – Calythera Overview

Calythera is a world governed by the precise, interlocking mechanisms of debt cycles, fractal aether distribution, and mechanical ingenuity. On the continent of Aeloria, four coalitions of city-states navigate these systems through calculated trade, controlled innovation, and synchronized resets that periodically clear accumulated obligations across the land. North to south, the terrain shifts from temperate highlands and geothermal valleys to the fractured southern Wastes — where the consequences of an ancient cataclysm still linger in depleted aether and unreliable hemotech.

There is no magic in Calythera. There is only the Spark, the machine, and the debt you owe the machine for running.

Geography

Aeloria is the primary continent. Its northern highlands contain temperate zones interrupted by geothermal rifts and river systems that supply heat and transport to the major settlements. Southward, the terrain grows increasingly barren, giving way to the Wastes — a vast region of fractured earth and depleted aether where standard hemotech loses reliable function. The transition is gradual. Almost gentle. Until the land itself seems to remember what it lost.

Fractal aether veins extend outward from the primary font beneath Ashmourne Spire on the shores of Aethermere Lake. These veins are not independent sources — they are extensions of a single origin point, delivering energy to the city-states at diminishing efficiency as distance increases. Every conduit requires continuous recalibration. Every settlement is, in some sense, a maintenance problem.

The six known operational hubs are:

  • Brassveil Port — Ironclad Dominion's maritime commerce hub on the eastern coast
  • Gildspire Nexus — Starwrought Enclave's highland research and prototype center
  • Ashmourne Spire — Verdis Covenant's geothermal and aether distribution heart
  • Ironshade Hold — Duskcrag Concord's fortified mineral processing settlement
  • The Verge — the last stable settlement before the deep Wastes
  • Ancorren — the Wastes-adjacent outpost and primary expedition staging ground

The Coalitions

Four coalitions govern the habitable portions of Aeloria. Each has developed distinct mechanical, societal, and economic systems adapted to its environment.

Ironclad Dominion

Centered on maritime commerce from Brassveil Port. The Trade Council governs all major decisions, aligning them with debt cycle calendars. The Dominion's strength is logistics — they move things, account for things, and enforce contracts with the patience of people who know the reset is coming and have planned accordingly.

Starwrought Enclave

Occupies the northern highland valleys and elevated spires, with its primary hub at Gildspire Nexus. The Enclave runs on hierarchical laboratories, prototype refinement, and visible demonstrations of mechanical precision. Governed by the Resonance Council. If the Dominion moves things, the Enclave builds them — and charges accordingly.

Verdis Covenant

Centered on the geothermal lake district, with its functional heart at Ashmourne Spire. The Covenant controls the primary aether font and specializes in sustainable energy distribution. Governed by the Council of the Font under Provost Liora Thorne. The Grand Alignment festival is hosted here every fiftieth cycle — the single most consequential event in Calythera's political calendar.

Duskcrag Concord

Maintains fortified holds in the volcanic Starcrag Ranges, centered on Ironshade Hold. The Concord specializes in mineral processing, durable hemotech components, and guarded innovation. Led by the Vault Council under Warden Garrick Stoneforge. They share what they build. They share it at a price.

Aether & Hemotech

Aether is the energy that runs Calythera — a fractal, circuit-like force distributed through etched resonance patterns in mechanical devices collectively called hemotech. It is not mystical. It does not respond to intention or will. It flows where the conduits direct it and stops where the conduits fail.

Aether density varies by location and determines what is possible in any given environment:

Density Typical Locations Effect on Hemotech Resonarch RP
Saturated Ashmourne Spire font, Grand Alignment ceremony Enhanced function CHA mod × 3
Stable Major city-states, settled territory Full normal function CHA mod × 2
Thin Borderlands, Calder Lines, outer settlements Reduced reliability CHA mod × 1
Depleted Deep Wastes, post-rift zones, Mourning sites Unreliable or inert CHA mod (min 1)

In Depleted zones, standard hemotech fails. The one known exception is the Primal Spark — an unexplained phenomenon confined to House Corvayne and player characters carrying the Resonant Mark.

Relics

Relics are hemotech items that have bonded to their user through resonance exposure. They advance through four tiers:

  • Dormant — base item, no special properties
  • Calibrated — first resonance property active
  • Resonant — two properties; 1-in-10 chance of Echo Relic (both properties simultaneously)
  • Masterwork — enhanced property plus a rolled Affix

Relics decay if not maintained. Calibrated items never decay. Resonant and Masterwork items require maintenance every three sessions or begin to degrade.

The Debt Cycle

Calythera runs on debt — not as a metaphor, but as a literal mechanical system synchronized across all four coalitions through stamping engines linked to the aether veins.

  • Minor Reset — every seventh cycle. Accumulated personal and commercial debts across all coalitions are released. Trade balances are cleared. Contracts that have not been fulfilled are renegotiated or voided.
  • Grand Reset — every fiftieth cycle. Leases, hereditary claims, and guild patents revert to their originating families or coalitions. A civilization-wide reversion. The Grand Alignment festival at Ashmourne Spire marks this event.

Defaulting on registered debt before a reset carries legal consequences enforced by coalition authorities. The system is not forgiving. It is, however, predictable — which is more than most systems offer.

The Resonant Mark

Every player character in Calythera carries the Resonant Mark — a physical manifestation of aether exposure that expresses differently across races. It is not named or publicly theorized within the world. Most people who carry it do not know what it is. They know what it does.

The Mark manifests as:

  • Human — Spark Scars: branching marks that appear along the skin wherever the Mark fires most strongly
  • Gnome — Circuit Trace: fine silver-blue lines following the nervous system, visible at temples and forearms
  • Dwarf — Forge Lines: metallic filament seams along knuckles, wrists, and jaw
  • Aetherborn — Fractal Veins: luminescent branching patterns beneath translucent skin, visible at all times
  • Reclaimer — Ash Marks: angular geometric patterns in ash-grey along shoulders, collarbone, and hands

The Primal Spark — the full, uncontrolled expression of the Resonant Mark — is confined to the Velythar family line and player characters. It is not reproducible, not fully understood, and not something the coalitions have successfully studied.

The Five Races

Five races inhabit Calythera. Each carries the Resonant Mark in a distinct form, with distinct mechanical implications for play.

Race Ability Scores Size Speed Resonant Mark
Human +1 all OR +2/+1 focused Medium 30 ft Spark Scars — branching, personal, unpredictable
Gnome +2 INT, +1 DEX Small 25 ft Circuit Trace — fires narrowly and accurately in domain
Dwarf +2 CON, +1 STR Medium 25 ft* Forge Lines — fires through craft and construction
Aetherborn +2 WIS, +1 CHA Medium 30 ft Fractal Veins — luminescent, always visible, cannot be suppressed
Reclaimer +1 CON, +1 WIS, +1 any Medium 30 ft Ash Marks — fires strongest in Depleted aether; marks darken, not glow

* Dwarf speed is not reduced by armor.

The Eight Classes

Eight classes are available in Calythera, each built around a distinct mechanical resource system.

Class Role Core Resource Subclasses
Pulsant Ranged healer / offensive chemist Doses + Vial Die Restorationist · Venom Specialist
Resonarch Full support — zero damage Resonance Points (aether-scaled) Chorral · Vox Cipher · Presswork · Prismatic
Phantom Infiltrator / saboteur Stealth Gauge Operative · Saboteur
Vanguard Polearm reach fighter Momentum Gauge Ironclad Line · Spire Guard
Weaver Battlefield engineer / turret operative Deployment Gauge Forge Build · Etch Build
Ironbreaker Dual-wield DPS / overload specialist Overload charges + Exhaustion Furycog · Ashwalker
Bulwark Aether shield guardian Shield Charge Vaultkeeper · Fontguard
Strider Ranged precision / mobile hunter Hunter's Mark tiers Skywatcher · Wastes Tracker

One Resonarch per party. Two instruments in proximity create harmonic interference that renders both ineffective. This is a documented mechanical phenomenon, not a house rule.

For full class features, level progression, and subclass details, see each class's dedicated page.
