Gnomes are the smallest people of Aeloria and, in the specific domain of precision hemotech work, among the most capable. Their dexterity is extraordinary — the ability to work at the fine scale that advanced resonance etching and prototype component assembly requires is not evenly distributed across the peoples of the continent, and gnomes have it in a way that larger-handed species simply do not. The Starwrought Enclave knows this and has built significant portions of its prototype development infrastructure around gnomish precision capabilities. The continent's hemotech landscape reflects the results.
They concentrate in Gildspire Nexus and the Enclave's technical centers, though gnomish tinkerers and engineers are present across all four coalition territories and the independent regions between them. Wherever fine mechanical work is required and someone is willing to pay for it to be done correctly, there is usually a gnome who can do it.
Characteristics
Gnomish physical precision is the defining characteristic — hands built for small-scale work, visual acuity suited to fine detail, and a particular cognitive aptitude for understanding complex mechanical systems at the component level. Their workshops reflect this: organized around the work rather than around presentation, filled with tools calibrated to scales that other peoples find impractical, and producing prototypes whose internal complexity is not always visible from the outside but is always present.
The cultural tendency toward rapid iteration — building a version, finding what is wrong with it, building a better version — is documented across gnomish engineering communities in all four coalition territories. It produces a high failure rate and a high innovation rate simultaneously, which the Starwrought Enclave's research culture accommodates more effectively than the other coalitions' more conservative approaches. Gnomes who find the Enclave's structured evaluation process too slow sometimes work independently. The prototypes they produce outside formal evaluation channels are interesting and occasionally a serious problem for whoever is nearby when they fail.
Role in Aeloria
Gnomes dominate the precision engineering and prototype development sectors of the Starwrought Enclave — circuit design, resonance etching at the fine scale, and the component-level work that makes prototype devices function correctly rather than approximately. The Enclave's patent portfolio owes a significant share of its breadth to gnomish contributions, which the Enclave acknowledges in its official records and the gnomish engineers involved in those contributions have opinions about in terms of recognition and compensation.
Outside the Enclave, gnomes work as independent tinkerers in the commercial districts of major city-states, as specialists in the Duskcrag Concord's forge operations where precision component work intersects with heavy manufacturing, and in the Verdis Covenant's calibration divisions where the font management work requires the kind of fine resonance adjustment that gnomish hands are suited to. They are not concentrated in the Ironclad Dominion's commercial infrastructure, which values throughput over precision and tends to get what it pays for.
