Calythera Archives – Entry 60 – Human

Humans are the most numerous people in Aeloria — the majority population in every coalition territory, every border settlement, and most of the independent regions between the major city-states. They occupy nearly every role in the continent's economy and governance, from the dock labor that moves goods through Brassveil Port's wharves to the administrative positions that maintain the coalition bureaucracies to the research posts at Vellumspire Academy and the Enclave's laboratory spires. There is no part of Aeloria where humans are absent, no coalition whose functioning does not depend on them substantially, and no occupation that human individuals do not fill somewhere.

This distribution is not a result of any particular advantage. It is a result of numbers, adaptability, and the particular human characteristic of turning up everywhere and staying.

Characteristics

Humans exhibit wider physical variation than any other people on the continent — the range of build, coloring, and physical capability across the human population reflects the diversity of the environments they have inhabited and the absence of the geographic concentration that shapes the other peoples of Aeloria more uniformly. They are generalists in the specific sense that they lack the specialized capabilities that define other peoples — dwarves' geothermal endurance, gnomes' particular precision, Aetherborn's resonance sensitivity — and compensate for this with the kind of broad adaptability that produces competence across a wide range of conditions rather than excellence in specific ones.

This is not a limitation in a world that requires people to do many different things. It is, in practice, why humans are everywhere.

Distribution and Coalition Roles

Humans form the majority population in all four coalition territories and hold positions at every level of every coalition's governance and operational structure. The Trade Council of the Ironclad Dominion is majority human. The Resonance Council of the Starwrought Enclave includes significant human representation, though the Enclave's merit-based membership structure means human representation there reflects demonstrated achievement rather than demographic weight. The Verdis Covenant and Duskcrag Concord both have substantial human populations in their administrative and operational ranks.

In the independent territories — the border settlements, the nomadic clans, the operators who work outside coalition structure — humans are similarly dominant. House Corvayne is a human clan. Most of the independent operators who pass through Ancorren and stage expeditions into the Wastes are human. The Reclaimers, who occupy the borderlands and outer territories, are their own people — not a variant of human, but a distinct people who share the continent.

The Resonant Mark

All five peoples of Aeloria carry the Resonant Mark. Most do not know what it is. For humans, whose relationship to aether is standard rather than heightened, the Mark is not visible and does not manifest in any way that daily life brings to attention. What it is, and what it means that every person on the continent carries it, is not established in any accessible archive.

The coalitions do not discuss the Resonant Mark in public documentation. Independent researchers who have raised the question have found the topic either not responded to or actively redirected. This is noted here as a documented observation.
