Halvon Corvayne is the permanent keeper of Ancorren — the pre-Mourning outpost at the threshold of the southern Wastes that House Corvayne has operated for as long as any record accounts for. He has been there for longer than most of the people who pass through it have been alive. He shows no indication of intending to be anywhere else.
His role at Ancorren is operational rather than ceremonial. He maintains the outpost's infrastructure, manages the Marker Hall that tracks expedition departures and returns, updates the cairn network maps when returning parties bring new information, and coordinates the resupply and equipment repair services that make Ancorren the last reliable stop before the deep Wastes. He also cooks — the Last Meal tradition that Ancorren observes for every southbound expedition is his to uphold, and he upholds it personally when his other responsibilities allow, which is more often than they would seem to.
At Ancorren
Halvon's connection to Ancorren runs deeper than tenure. The outpost's Wall of Names — the record of every expedition member who has passed through Ancorren on the way south — is his ongoing project. He adds names. He notes returns. He marks the ones who did not return, in a manner the Wall's own documentation does not describe explicitly and which visitors to the outpost understand without being told.
He knows the routes south better than anyone currently operating in the region. Not from current expeditions — Halvon does not go south anymore, or has not been documented doing so in any recent account — but from a period of operational history that he does not discuss in detail and that other sources reference only obliquely. What he did in the Wastes, and for how long, is not established in accessible documentation. What it produced is a knowledge of the deep interior that expedition parties consistently describe as more precise than the maps.
The cairn network that House Corvayne maintains through the accessible Wastes is his inheritance from whoever established it before him and his ongoing responsibility. He reviews confirmation status from returning expeditions at the start of each cycle and updates the route maps in the Marker Hall accordingly. Expeditions that leave Ancorren with Halvon's route guidance have better survival rates than those that do not. This is documented in the outpost's own records and is not contested.
What Is Known and What Isn't
Halvon Corvayne's history before his current tenure at Ancorren is not well documented in accessible records. House Corvayne's internal records, which are not public, presumably contain more. What outside observers have established is limited: he is old enough to have known Eldrin Corvayne personally during Eldrin's time with the clan, which provides a rough lower bound on his age without establishing an upper one. He arrived at Ancorren — or returned to it, accounts differ — at a point that predates the current generation of Corvayne operators. He has been there since.
He does not discuss Elara Corvayne's death with visitors. He does not discuss his own history with visitors. He discusses the routes, the current state of the Wastes near the perimeter, the status of the cairn network, and the condition of whatever equipment a southbound party has brought with them. These conversations are, by consistent account, extremely useful.
The Wall of Names at Ancorren contains his name. It has been there since before anyone currently at the outpost arrived. He has not explained this and no one has asked him to.
