Calythera Archives – Entry 50 – Relic Delves
Relic Delves are organized expeditions into the Wastes for the recovery of pre-Mourning materials — hemotech devices, architectural salvage, Blackvein Crystal deposits, documentary records, and the category of object whose function or significance cannot be determined until it has been examined by someone with the knowledge to examine it. The industry has been running since the post-Mourning reconstruction period, when the first operators discovered that the buried ruins of the Verdant Cradle contained materials that current methods could not produce and that the continent's rebuilding infrastructure needed. It has not stopped since. The Wastes are dangerous, the aether is depleted, the ruins are unstable, and the margins on successful recovery are substantial enough that none of this has discouraged anyone.
The Wastes do not care about motivation. They apply the same conditions to sanctioned coalition research expeditions, independent relic hunters operating on private contracts, and the occasional party whose purpose is not fully disclosed in their departure log at Ancorren. The survival rate correlates with preparation, experience, and the quality of the guide — not with the legitimacy of the objective.
What Gets Recovered
Pre-Mourning hemotech is the primary target of most commercially motivated delves. The Verdant Cradle civilization operated hemotech at a level comparable to the present day in some respects and more advanced in others — recovered devices include resonance patterns that the Starwrought Enclave's current engineering cannot fully replicate and component designs that have directly informed post-recovery innovation. Intact devices in working condition command prices that make the cost of a well-equipped expedition look modest. Partially functional devices, damaged samples, and fragment sets with incomplete resonance patterns still trade at margins that sustain the industry's middle tier.
Blackvein Crystal from Wastes deposits is a secondary target for operators who know what they are looking for and how to handle it. Surface-grade crystal from the Starcrag Ranges is more accessible and less dangerous. Deep Wastes crystal — from deposits that formed in the aether-rich environment of the pre-Mourning southern continent — exists in concentrations and configurations that Starcrag material does not match. The operators who specialize in crystal recovery are a small subset of the broader delving community and typically work exclusively with House Corvayne guides.
Documentary recovery — physical records, inscribed surfaces, sealed archives — is the focus of coalition-sanctioned research expeditions and the independent scholars who fund their own work south of The Verge. The Verdant Cradle's administrative and technical records, where they survive, represent primary sources for questions about the pre-Mourning world that the coalition archives' sealed holdings do not answer. What those records contain, when they are found, is the subject of vigorous academic interest and, occasionally, vigorous coalition interest of a less academic nature.
Operations
Most delves stage from Ancorren — the last point at which equipment can be reliably repaired, supplies replenished, and route intelligence updated before the deep Wastes begin in earnest. The Marker Hall at Ancorren maintains current expedition maps and cairn confirmation status. Operators who depart without consulting it are making a choice that the Wastes will eventually comment on.
Standard expedition composition for a mid-depth commercial delve includes a House Corvayne guide — effectively a requirement below the outer borderlands, where Primal Spark capability is the difference between functional hemotech and dead equipment — armed security personnel, a resonance specialist for device assessment and safe extraction, and whatever subject-matter expertise the expedition's specific objective requires. Larger research expeditions add documentation staff, additional security, and dedicated equipment management.
Depth is the primary variable. Outer Wastes work — within a few days of Ancorren — operates in conditions where standard hemotech functions with attention and experienced management. Mid-depth work requires Corvayne guides and careful cell management. The deep interior, approaching the buried center of the Verdant Cradle's former territory, operates at the edge of what any preparation can reliably address. Expeditions that reach depth and return with what they came for are the ones that planned for what the Wastes actually is rather than what they hoped it would be.
Rift Season Considerations
Rift Season affects delving operations significantly. Storm activity in the Wastes is more frequent and more severe during Rift Season than at other points in the cycle, and the Wastes' already-compromised aether substrate amplifies storm effects rather than dampening them. Most experienced operators reduce their depth of penetration during Rift Season or suspend Wastes operations entirely.
The exception is the post-storm recovery window. Rift-storms in the Wastes regularly expose pre-Mourning structures that have been buried under decades of sediment — shifting terrain, opening access points, and occasionally bringing materials to surface levels that would otherwise require significant excavation to reach. Operators who can move quickly after a major storm, before the terrain settles and before competing expeditions arrive, can recover materials from positions that were inaccessible the day before. The window is short. The preparation required to use it is substantial.
The Coalitions' Position
All four coalitions have a formal position on relic delving and an operational relationship with it that does not always match the formal position. Officially, coalition-sanctioned research expeditions operate under permit, recovered materials of significant historical or technical value are subject to coalition review, and the export of certain categories of pre-Mourning technology requires authorization. Unofficially, the permit system has gaps, the review process is inconsistent, and the authorization requirements for technology export are applied selectively in ways that experienced operators have learned to navigate.
The Starwrought Enclave takes the most active institutional interest in recovered pre-Mourning hemotech — acquisitions, research permits, and the occasional direct approach to operators whose recovery has produced something the Enclave's researchers want to examine. Their offers are generally fair. Their persistence when the initial offer is declined is also generally consistent.
