Calythera Archives – Entry 85 – Verdant Cradle
The Verdant Cradle was the name given to the southern region of Aeloria that supported the continent's most advanced pre-Mourning civilization. It no longer exists. The Mourning ended it — the catastrophic event that reshaped the southern continent left the Verdant Cradle's territory as what is now the deep Wastes, its population destroyed, its infrastructure collapsed, and its records scattered across the archives of the four coalitions that organized themselves in the aftermath.
What the Verdant Cradle was, precisely, is not fully reconstructable from the surviving documentation. What it contained, what its governance looked like, what daily life in it involved — these questions have partial answers drawn from recovered fragments, pre-Mourning artifacts found in Wastes expeditions, and the references to it in documents that survived because they were held in locations that the Mourning did not reach. The picture is incomplete in ways that are probably permanent.
What Is Known
The Verdant Cradle was the operational territory of the first aether font — the font that is no longer accessible. The region's fertility and density of settlement reflected this: aether-rich geology produces conditions that support agriculture, construction, and the kind of concentrated population that generates complex civilization. The Cradle had all of these. Pre-Mourning references describe it in terms that suggest it was, by the standards of its time, the center of the known world.
The civilization it supported had developed hemotech to a level that current researchers assess as broadly comparable to the present day — some capabilities appear to have been more advanced, others less so, and the specific areas of difference are subjects of ongoing scholarly debate. What is clear from recovered artifacts is that the Cradle's hemotech culture was sophisticated, widespread, and deeply integrated into daily life in ways that the post-Mourning coalitions have spent generations reconstructing.
The first font was located somewhere in the Cradle's southern territory. Its precise location is not established in any accessible record. The Verdis Covenant's sealed Mourning-period documents are believed to contain relevant information. The Covenant has not confirmed this.
What Was Lost
The Mourning destroyed not only the Verdant Cradle's population and physical infrastructure but most of its documentation. The libraries, records, and institutional archives that a civilization of its scale would have maintained did not survive intact. What exists now is fragments — objects recovered from Wastes ruins by relic hunters and researchers, references in documents held by institutions far enough from the event to survive it, and the oral traditions of communities whose ancestors witnessed the Mourning from a distance.
The gaps in the record are not random. Several researchers who have studied the surviving pre-Mourning documentation have noted that certain categories of record — those relating to the font's operation, to the events immediately preceding the Mourning, and to the governance structures that made decisions in the Cradle's final period — are underrepresented relative to what a civilization of that scale would be expected to produce. Whether this reflects the selective destruction of the Mourning itself, the selective survival of less consequential documents, or something else is not established.
The Wastes and What Remains
The territory of the Verdant Cradle is now the deep Wastes. The geological transformation was thorough: the fertile land is gone, the aether veins that fed the region are depleted or disrupted, and the surface has been reshaped by the aether release event into something that bears little physical resemblance to what pre-Mourning accounts describe.
The ruins are still there, buried. Relic hunters who reach the deep Wastes find pre-Mourning structures preserved beneath ash and fractured stone — buildings, infrastructure, the physical remains of a civilization that did not have time to evacuate. What those structures contain, and what they can tell researchers about what the Verdant Cradle actually was, is a question that the hazard conditions of the deep Wastes make expensive to answer.
Ancorren is the primary staging point for expeditions heading south toward what was the Cradle's territory. Halvon Corvayne maintains the cairn network that marks the safest known routes into the interior. The routes change as the Wastes shift. The cairns are updated accordingly.
